Every day across Ukraine, a national One Minute Silence is held at 9am. Radio stations play an announcement at the start, a timer during the period, and a notification at the end. I’ve seen cars stop in the street during the silence in Lviv, with the driver getting out of the car to stand with his hand on his heart. In the café in Kyiv, people pushed their chairs back to stand for the silence. Interestingly, in Kharkiv, people did not seem to bother with it so much- maybe because the war is not something to be remembered, but much more of a pressing issue. I’m told that 80% of Kharkiv’s current residents are Internally Displaced People.
