Iryna: So, in the beginning of the war when Russian tanks and echelons were just entering Kyiv, I was acquainted with a guy. He’s very young, he’s younger than me. He was probably 19 or 18 at that moment, and he joined the military forces right away. The Russian troops were already getting closer to Kyiv, which was maybe like day three, day four of the war. Him and his buddies, they were not regular forces of the Ukrainian military because at the time, Ukrainian military- well, Ukrainian military administrations were giving out different weapons and guns to civilians to protect Kyiv and other regions.
So they were not like an ordinary part of the military, but they had guns. And there were a handful of them. They were situated at a little hill, so they could see that across the street from the road- from the hill, there was a gas station. Two Russian tanks approached the gas station to most likely get some gas, and they could see that a whole bunch of tanks were like a couple kilometres away, waiting for these two tanks to say, “it’s clear!” and they would follow them, and they would continue going towards the Kyiv city centre.
So my friend and his buddies, they waited for the Russians to get out of the tanks and go to the gas station. They brought- my friend brought a Ukrainian flag and put it on one of those tanks, and took down Russian flags. So, the Russian tanks started approaching from the back, and they saw Ukrainian tanks here at the gas station! They started shooting at them. And these handful of Russians that were at the gas station, they got back into their tanks- and they thought that those were Ukrainian tanks shooting at them, so they started shooting back. They just completely destroyed <laughs>, each side, and there were only a couple tanks that survived it. They just all got bombed <laughs>.
So they destroyed each other, kind of. I’m not sure if it’s true because that’s the only time I heard this story, but this is something that is hard to believe in and very interesting.
