Jay: We were doing supply runs out to Mykolaiv, and Mykolaiv was under artillery bombardment. We had these Lindt eggs. So we would distribute some just to people, and then if there were like a whole gaggle of kids, we would basically tell them they have to cover their eyes for five minutes, and we’d hide them. It was the most surreal fucking thing because you have kids running around looking for eggs. Meanwhile, you have smoke in the background and air alarms going off. But the kids are just having a good fucking time. <laughs>
But meanwhile, like coming from somewhere where, you know, you’ve never experienced something like this, you’re like, “What sort of fucking hellscape am I in that this is reality?” But then you adjust to it so fucking quickly that it’s not even funny. Within two days, you’re out there running with the kids. You’re like, “Ah, it’s fine it’s an air raid, whatever”. Human beings adjust incredibly quickly to circumstances like that and just, you adopt a mentality of “Okay well if I’m hit by an artillery shell then it is what it is, might as well enjoy what I’m doing before it happens”.
